History of IISc

The Government of India, Jamsetji Tata, and the Maharaja of Mysore established IISc Bangalore in 1909. Setting up the IISc was one of the few steps to create a center for scientific research and to overcome India’s higher education deficiency. The first idea of IISc came to the mind of famous industrialist Jamsetji Tata in the 1890s, and he decided to set up a world-class university in India using his personal wealth. Maharaja of Mysore, who himself was a great supporter of education and research, supported this dream of Jamsetji Tata. The Regent Queen Maharani Kempananjammani Vani Vilasa Sannidhana—her son Krishnaraja Wadiyar was a minor then—provided 371 acres and 16 guntas of land in Bangalore, along with some funds. The rest of the money came from the colonial government of India.

But unfortunately, Jamsethji Tata died in the summer of 1904 and could not see his dream getting fulfilled. English chemist Morris Travers was the first director of IISc. The first batch was announced in 1911, and there were a total of 24 students in the first batch of IISc. Initially, there were only two courses in IISc. General and Applied Chemistry and Electrical Technology.
