The National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test – NEET is one of the most important exams for those who wish to have a career in the medical field. Students from a science background who are in class 12^th or have passed class 12^th are eligible for this exam. NEET is highly competitive in nature; in 2024, more than 24 lakh aspirants registered for NEET, whereas the total number of MBBS seats in medical colleges is not even 2 lakh. In such a case, a question arises in the minds of students about what they can do if they fail to secure a seat in MBBS. Generally, in the absence of correct guidance, most of the aspirants go for a year-drop or pursue some other course. Courses after NEET

Generally, most of the aspirants who appear in NEET have only one goal, which is to get selected in the MBBS seat of any medical college. However, it is not possible that everyone gets selected for the MBBS seat. Only a few students can make it to the MBBS seat in government medical college. Few may join private medical colleges, and the majority of the rest remain in a confused state due to a lack of proper guidance and information. Let us look at the courses.

MBBS: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, MBBS is generally the first priority of the majority of the aspirants who appear in NEET. Generally students opt for MBBS in government colleges but if they don’t get a seat in a government college and they can afford then they turn to private colleges. MBBS is a 5.5 year course (4.5 years course + 1 year internship). After completion of MBBS, generally, most students go for higher studies in order to gain specialization. Some others join government/private hospitals, and some try to clear government exams.
BDS: Bachelor of Dental Surgery, BDS is one of the most preferred courses after MBBS. Generally, those who could not grab a seat in MBBS College go for BDS. It is a 5-year course (4-year course+1-year internship). After the completion of the course, students can start their career as dentists or dental surgeons. Students can also go for post-graduation in order to gain specialization. Additionally, they can join BDS in various medical colleges after clearing the cut-off marks and getting a good rank in the NEET.
BAMS: Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, BAMS is another most preferred course by those aspirants who cleared NEET but could not get an MBBS seat in medical college. BAMS is an ayurvedic course of 5.5 years. After completion of the course, students can start their career as an ayurvedic doctor or consultant in government or private hospitals.
BHMS: Bachelor of Homeopathy Medicine and Surgery, BHMS is a 5.5-year course, which aspirants opt for in case they could not get a MBBS seat in a government or private medical college. It is one of the trending branches of treatment in which the treatment doesn’t cause adverse effects on the health. Students can enroll in the BHMS course on the basis of their NEET score.
BUMS: Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery, BUMS is a 5.5-year medical course that students can pursue after clearing NEET. BUMS focuses on the four basic elements: air, water, earth, and fire. Unani has been the 4^th most popular medicine system after allopathy, ayurveda, and homeopathy. BUMS is one of the best courses for those who are looking for a career in the field of Unani medicine. Admission into BUMS depends upon the NEET score.
BNYS: Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences, BYNS is another 5.5-year course in the medical field. BNYS focuses on building naturopaths and yoga professionals who can treat health disorders naturally without any surgery. This course is a mixture of cultural ethno-medicine techniques and biomedical techniques. After the completion of the course, students can work in various fields such as medical, research, academics, etc. This course comes under the NEET exam, which means students can join BNYS after clearing NEET.
V.Sc and AH: B.V.Sc. and AH stand for Bachelors of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. Those who are interested in the treatment of animals can pursue this course. The duration of this course is 5.5 years. Although this course focuses on the wellness and treatment of animals, yet this comes under NEET.
BPT: Bachelors of Physiotherapy, BPT is one of the trending career options. Those who are interested in rehabilitation and physical therapy can pursue this course. BPT is a 4.5-year course (4-year course + 6-month internship). BPT graduates can work in different sectors, like hospitals, rehabilitation centers, sports clinics, etc.
BSMS: Bachelors of Siddha Medicine and Surgery, BSMS is a 5.5-year undergraduate course focusing on various aspects of Siddha Medicine. After completion of the course, BSMS graduates can work as Siddha doctors.
