Career Options after 12th Science

Science stream is the most popular and preferred branch of students as it offers lots of career options. However, most of the students and parents knew only about engineering and medicine as the best available careers, but there are other thriving careers too.

Students having an interest in biology or having PCB (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) as their main subjects in class 12th can go for MBBS, Nursing, B. Pharma, B.D.S., BVSc. BUMS, BAMS, BHMS Forensic Science, Dietician, etc.

Whereas students having an interest in mathematics or having PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) as their main subjects in class 12th can go for B. Tech, B. Arch, Pilot, BCA, NDA, Merchant Navy, Army, Navy, Fashion Designing, etc.

Engineering:

Engineering is one of the most preferred career options for many students in India. It is a 4-year professional degree course in which students get placed in the final year. Admission to various engineering courses and colleges depends upon the marks scored by candidates in the JEE (Joint Entrance Exam). This Exam has two stages, viz., JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE Main is conducted twice, and JEE Advanced is conducted once a year. The applicant should have a combination of PCM in class 12th in order to be eligible for the JEE.

Colleges like IIT’s, NIT’s, IIIT’s, IIST, IISc, and other government-funded institutes accept JEE Main and Advanced Scorecards for admission in 4-year B.E./B.Tech. degree courses, 5-year integrated dual degree courses, etc.

BITSAT, or BITS Admission Test, is another exam for admission into various engineering courses at the BITS (Birla Institute of Technology and Science) Pilani Campus, KK Birla Goa Campus, and Hyderabad Campus. BITS is one of the most preferred private colleges in India. Every year, lots of students appear in the BITSAT exam. BITS has an international campus in Dubai.

Other than this, one can appear for various other private university entrance exams, such as VITEEE, SRMJEEE, etc. Students can have a wonderful career as engineers if they study well at these colleges.

After completion of engineering, generally, the students get placed in various national and multinational companies at a very good package. Some students continue their education while some prepare for government jobs, depending on their choice.

MBBS:

The other famous and preferred career option that comes to mind for students after 12th grade is MBBS. Getting admission into an MBBS college is considered to be more tough than getting an MBBS degree. Students can get admission to various medical colleges for MBBS via the NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test). This exam is considered to be one of the toughest entrance exams at the undergraduate level. Every year, approximately 16–20 lakh students appear for the NEET exam. In 2024, around 24 lakh candidates appeared for the NEET exams. What’s scarier than the number 24 lakh is the number of MBBS seats via NEET. Currently, there are only 91,927 MBBS seats in the country, due to which the competition is very high.

The minimum age for the NEET exam is 17 years; however, there is no upper age limit for the NEET exam, due to which a lot of students give this exam multiple times. After getting selected in the MBBS colleges, the students pursue the MBBS course for 5.5 years, including 1 year of internship. The aspirant should have passed class 12th with PCB in order to join any medical college.

After completion of MBBS, one can go for higher studies or practice as a doctor in government or private hospitals and organizations. Other than MBBS, the NEET scorecard can also help in grabbing a seat for BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery), BHMS (Bachelors of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery), BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery), etc.

After completion of BDS, one can either go for higher education or practice as a Dentist in various government/ private hospitals.

Nursing:

After completing class 12th with PCB as main subject students can also go for B.Sc nursing course. It is a four-year undergraduate course in Nursing. The admissions are granted on the basis of NEET scorecard. Also, various universities conduct their own exams.

B. Pharma:

B. Pharma (Bachelor of Pharmacy) is a four-year degree course for pharmacy. It is an excellent choice of students who want to go in the medicine or the pharmacy field. One should have completed class 12th with PCB/PCM to join B. Pharma. However, students whose result for class 12th are awaited can also apply for the course. After successfully completion of 4 years the candidates can either opt for M pharma or go for competitive exams or can start their business.

NDA:

Apart from engineering and medicine, one can also go for the NDA exam. The NDA (National Defence Academy), is the tri-service defense training institute of the Indian defense forces. The academy is located in Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. The cadets are trained here before getting inducted into the various training academies of their respective forces. The NDA exam has an age limit of 16.5 to 19.5 years.

NDA exam is conducted by UPSC. The selection in the NDA is very tough. Cadets have to prove their excellence mentally as well as physically. The selection process includes a written test along with an SSB and medical. SSB is a 5-day procedure where the officers test candidates at various levels. After selection, the cadets undergo basic military training for 3 years and then further 1 year training in their selected force academies, like the IMA, INA, or the Air Force Academy. After one year, the candidate gets absorbed into their respective forces at the posts of Lieutenant in the army, Sub Lieutenant in the Navy, and Flying Officer in the Indian Air Force.

For the army, anyone who has passed class 12th in any stream is eligible, whereas for the Air Force and navy, one should have passed class 12th with PCM. Students who are appearing in class 12th can also apply for the examination. NDA is one of the best career options for science students, as there is 100% placement in the defense forces after successful completion of 4 years. However, the selection in NDA is very tough.

Merchant Navy:

Merchant Navy is a good career option for students in class 12th who have PCM as a subject. The student should have at least 60% marks in class 12th in order to join the Merchant Navy. One needs to clear the IMUCET (Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test) in order to join the merchant navy. The questions are generally asked from PCM of Class 11th and 12th along with GK and English.

Apart from these courses, the candidates can go for fashion designing courses in NIFT, Bachelors in Veterinary sciences, Bachelors in Food Technology, etc.

Also, one can enroll in 3-year B.Sc. courses after completing class 12th with PCM/PCB and further prepare for various government exams and higher education simultaneously, or one can directly prepare for government exams like SSC-CHSL, Agniveer, etc.

It is said that it’s not about the course you choose or which college you choose or get selected; rather, what is more, important is how you pursue the course, how much effort you are putting into the course, and how much interest you are taking in that particular course.
