Established in the year 1948, after World War II, AFMC was initially focused on postgraduate studies. In 1962, the undergraduate (UG) courses were started. However, originally AFMC was established in the year 1944 by Lt. Colonel Darshan Singh Vohra with the aim of providing treatment to the wounded in action (WIA) soldiers of the Indian army. Post-Independence, on the recommendation of the BC Roy committee, various medical corps units of the Indian army were intermixed in one unit to form the Armed Forces Medical College.
The graduate program was initiated on 4th August 1962 with an aim to increase the intake of medical graduates in the armed forces, and hence this day is celebrated as AFMC day by its alumni. Till 1999, the graduate program was affiliated with the “University of Pune,” but currently it is affiliated with the “Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.”.
Undergraduate courses that are offered by AFMC are MBB, Nursing, and Paramedical courses, out of which MBBS is the oldest course, which was started in 1962. The first batch was passed in October 1966 under one of its founding members, Commandant Maj Gen Noshir Karani.
