NTA reverted to tie-breaker policy for NEET candidates
Dear Aspirants,
Do you know?
The National Testing Agency (NTA) recently released new guidelines regarding the tie-breaker policy and a new revised Information Bulletin for the NEET (UG)-2024.
In this blog post, we will look into the important points of the NTA tie-breaker policy.
To ensure a fair ranking system in the NEET, the National Testing Agency rectified the tie-breaker policy for the NEET.
Earlier, the NTA had introduced the tie-breaker rule of drawing a lottery by computer in case of a tie.
According to the new rules of the NTA, in the event of a tie among the candidates, rank determination will no longer be decided through the lottery system. It shows that NTA is continuously taking positive steps towards ensuring fairness in the NEET examination process.
What is Tie-Breaker Policy?
A tie-breaker policy is essential to assigning ranks in cases where two or more candidates obtain equal marks or percentile scores in the NEET (UG) examination resulting in a tie.
NTA Tie-Breaker Policy
According to the National Testing Agency (NTA), the inter-se-merit method for determining ranks will be as follows:
- Higher marks or percentile scores in Biology (Botany & Zoology), followed by
- Higher marks or percentile scores in Chemistry, followed by
- Higher marks or percentile scores in Physics, followed by
- Less proportion of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all the subjects, followed by
- Less proportion of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Biology (Botany & Zoology), followed by
- Less proportion of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Chemistry, followed by
- Less proportion of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Physics.
The revised tie-breaker methods in NEET ensure a quite fair rank-allocation process as it takes into account various NEET ranking criteria to determine the final rank.
After changes in the tie-breaker policy, higher marks in each of the three subjects, then the lowest ratio of attempted incorrect and correct answers in the three subjects, and lastly, the lowest ratio of incorrect and correct answers in individual subjects, will be considered for rank determination.
Now, joint scorers will be based on the proportion of attempted correct and incorrect answers and the candidate’s performance in the various subjects in the NEET.
The outcome of the discussion is that the importance of accuracy in the examination is increasing significantly, so students need to prepare with unique approaches to gain an edge over other candidates in the examination. Along with good preparation, it’s accuracy that makes the difference in the rank.
It is advised to all the students preparing for the NEET to kindly focus on preparation and not panic about these new tie-breaker rules.
Conclusion
New tie-breaker procedures came into the picture to ensure a fair and impartial rank determination based on the candidate’s performance across various subjects. So it should be better to focus on each subject and ensure thorough preparation to secure a good rank in the NEET.
Practice a lot of quality questions to improve speed and accuracy. It is important to note that attempting incorrect answers may affect your rank in the exam because now it’s become a part of rank deciding factors. One should keep trying to improve accuracy and avoid guessing in the examination.
