How many AIIMS are there in India

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, popularly known as AIIMS, is one of the most prestigious and renowned medical institutions in India. AIIMS is more than a hospital, they are known for their top-class medical facilities, doctors, curriculum, and expertise in various medical fields. AIIMS have been declared as the Institutes of National Importance by the Act of Parliament. Other than medical services, AIIMS also offers various medical courses such as MBBS, nursing, B.Sc. in medical technology in radiography, B.Sc. (dental room assistant), MS/MD/MDS, DM, etc. MBBS from AIIMS is generally the most preferred undergraduate (UG) level course. Admission to MBBS is done on the basis of the NEET scorecard. However, most people, including the aspirant, don’t know more about AIIMS. In this blog, we’ll look at the other details of AIIMS, such as how many AIIMS there are in India, their foundation year, etc.

AIIMS

Currently there are 26 AIIMS in India, out of which 20 are fully operational and the rest are still under progress and would be completely operational in the upcoming years. AIIMS-Delhi is the oldest AIIMS. The foundation stone of AIIMS-Delhi was laid in the year 1952 under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956. In the year 1956, it achieved the status of Institute of National Importance.

Originally AIIMS-Delhi was proposed to be set up in Calcutta, but due to some reasons, the location was shifted to New Delhi, and from then, it has been providing top-notch medical services to the whole nation.

The plan to increase the number of AIIMS came in 2003, after the government launched the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Surakhsa Yojna (PMSSY) scheme. The aim of this scheme was to correct the regional imbalances in the availability of affordable healthcare services. For this scheme, the government proposed two plans: the first one was to set up more AIIMS-like medical institutes, and the second one was to upgrade the government medical colleges. However, this project was put on hold due to the change in government. In 2006, the scheme was officially announced, and 6 new AIIMS-like institutions were announced. In September 2012, the six institutions became operational through the All India Institute of Medical Science Act, 2012.

The development of AIIMS was done in various phases of PMSSY; let us look at these phases one by one.

Phase 1: In phase I, 6 AIIMS-like institutes were announced for Patna, Raipur, Bhopal, Bhubneshwar, Jodhpur, and Rishikesh with a budget of INR 332 crore per institution, which was further raised to Rs 810 crore in 2010.

Phase II: AIIMS Raibarelli was developed in phase II.

Phase III: In phase III, no new AIIMS were constructed, but six medical colleges of UP were modernized into super specialty hospitals on the lines of AIIMS.

Phase IV: In phase IV, a budget of ₹ 500 crore was announced for the setting up of four AIIMS in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra (Vidarbha Region), and UP (Purvanchal Region).

Phase V: In phase V of PMSSY, five new AIIMS were announced in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Assam, and Tamil Nadu, and an AIIMS-like structure in Bihar.

Phase VI: In phase VI of PMSSY, two new AIIMS were announced for Gujrat and Jharkhand.

Phase VII: AIIMS Telangana was announced in Phase VII.

Phase VIII: AIIMS Haryana in the Rewari District was announced under Phase VIII of PMSSY.

Along with this, AIIMS Manipur was also announced by PM Narendra Modi under the Atmanirbhar Bharat scheme.
